The A140 — Diss and the south
The Suffolk approach, and the slowest trunk road in the county — a Roman line that runs straight through the middle of every village on it rather than around them.
What this road does to a move
The A140 does not bypass much. It is a long single carriageway that passes directly through Long Stratton and a string of smaller places, each with its own speed limit, pinch point and school.
That makes it predictable but slow, and it makes the time of arrival matter. A loaded vehicle meeting the school run in Long Stratton is a known, avoidable problem.
It is also the corridor where a lot of Suffolk-to-Norfolk and Norfolk-to-Suffolk moves happen, because the two counties blur into each other around Diss and Harleston.
The properties along it
South Norfolk is timber-framed and thatched in places, with a lot of long low cottages, converted barns and former farmworkers’ terraces. Ceiling heights are low, doorways are lower, and beams cross doorways at head height more often than anywhere else in the county.
